What Idle is today
Idle is software: treasury analytics and record-keeping for startups, plus an interactive demo on a sample company. Idle is not a bank, not a broker-dealer, not an investment adviser, and not a money transmitter or custodian. Today, Idle does not hold, move, or invest real money or securities for anyone. This page is kept in lockstep with the product; the engineering-facing version is a compliance document in the source repository (docs/compliance.md), summarized in the docs.
Live today
- The interactive demo — the full product on Meridian Robotics, a sample company with a simulated ledger stored in your browser, priced from live public rates. Its transfers, settlements, and T-bill purchases are simulations; the “bank connection” is simulated and labeled as such.
- Live market data — SOFR and the effective fed funds rate from FRED; T-bill auction results and the daily yield curve from the U.S. Treasury — each figure with its own “as of” date, degrading to a labeled snapshot if an upstream is down.
- Yield-lost analytics — generic math: what a balance you type would earn at published rates. Information, not a recommendation.
- Workspaces — accounts (waitlist-gated), organizations with roles and invitations, an append-only audit log, and subscription billing through Stripe.
- Read-only bank connections — via Plaid: balances and transactions only — no money movement, and none possible. Access tokens are encrypted at rest and revoking access at your bank cuts Idle off. Runs against Plaid's sandbox (and says so in-product) until counsel confirms the privacy footing for production bank data.
Not live — and why
- Moving customer funds — requires a licensed partner (a BaaS/partner bank) or money-transmitter licensing. Will not ship before that footing exists.
- Purchasing T-bills for customers — requires a broker-dealer partner or registration. The ladder tool is planning math until then.
- Personalized investment advice — would require investment-adviser registration. Idle doesn't offer it, and its analytics must not be read as it.
Disclosures
- Not FDIC insured. Idle is not a bank and holds no deposits, so nothing at Idle is FDIC insured. Treasury securities are backed by the U.S. government but are not bank deposits, are not FDIC insured, and can lose value if sold before maturity.
- Not SIPC protected. No brokerage relationship exists, so no SIPC coverage exists.
- Not advice. Nothing on this site is investment, legal, tax, or accounting advice. Figures are educational calculations on public data; your decisions are your own.
- Market data is third-party public data and may be delayed or incomplete; each figure shows its own “as of” date and source status.
- No affiliation or endorsement. Idle is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED), the U.S. Department of the Treasury, or any institution named in the product.
- No offer of yield. Idle quantifies what idle cash forgoes at published rates; it does not pay, offer, or guarantee any return.
How we keep this honest
Two rules bind every public claim: features are described in the present tense only when they are shipped and enforced in the codebase (the pricing page marks each one live or coming soon), and “simulated” labels come off only in the release that ships the real thing. How each claim maps to the product is laid out in the docs, and customers or investors doing diligence can request access to the source repository, where every claim on this page is checkable.
